Ranking Member Lofgren Applauds Biden-Harris Administration Efforts to Bolster Fusion Energy in the US

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the Department of Energy (DOE) made several announcements for cutting-edge programs that will advance fusion energy efforts in the United States. First, DOE released its Fusion Energy Strategy 2024, which bolsters the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to advance the commercialization of fusion energy in the United States by closing research gaps and capitalizing on external partnerships. Next, DOE announced $180 million in funding for Fusion Innovative Research Engine (FIRE) Collaboratives. Finally, DOE shared several other updates for the Administration’s landmark 2022 Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy.

“I am very pleased to see the Department moving forward on each of these critical activities to accelerate the commercialization of fusion energy,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “They will help carry out key fusion energy provisions developed by the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee—first authorized in the bipartisan Energy Act of 2020 and extended in the CHIPS and Science Act. The recent progress and promise of fusion energy warrant our full support for the fusion programs and overall funding that Congress has authorized for Fiscal Year 2025, and I will continue to do everything I can to meet that goal.”
